English Conversation Podcast – IELTS Exam Tips with Jessica Beck
Amy: Hi, everybody, this is Amy from Real English Conversations. And as you guys know on our website, I don’t tend to focus on exam preparation, but I also know that many of you are learning English for a specific reason, such as immigrating to live abroad, maybe getting accepted by a specific university, or you’re trying to get a job with an international company. In a lot of these cases, you will have to do an exam to prove your English level.
And that’s why I decided to invite a very special guest to talk to us about the IELTS examination specifically, which is one of the most popular exams. Our special guest is Jessica Beck, she’s a former IELTS examiner that has been working with IELTS professionally for over 14 years. And I’m sure that she’s going to have some great tips and insights she can share with us today. So without further ado, here’s Jessica. How are you doing today?
Jessica: I’m doing great. Thank you so much for having me on the show to talk about IELTS.
Amy: Thank you so much for sharing your time and all of this wonderful knowledge. So would you be able to give us a quick introduction about yourself?
Jessica: Yeah, sure. So as you said, my name is Jessica Beck and I am one of the hosts of The IELTS Energy podcast. And I’m also on the All Ears English podcast once a week. I have been teaching English for a very long time you guys, I started teaching in Cambodia actually, and then spent about six years in Taiwan.
That’s why I became an IELTS examiner and that’s also where I wrote my first textbooks. I’ve published 16 textbooks up until now, for big names like Cengage and MacMillon. And yeah, my life is all about teaching English and helping people pass IELTS specifically.
Amy: Wow. That’s quite a career that you have under your belt already. That’s great. So why don’t we start with the basics?
Some of our listeners here, they might not know what the IELTS exam is. I’m sure most do. But for those that don’t. Can you tell us a little bit about it and why it’s so useful or helpful for students?
Jessica: Yeah, for sure. So IELTS is an acronym, of course, because every industry is chock full of acronyms. IELTS means International English Language Testing System. And there are two versions, the academic and the general. So students take the academic IELTS exam when they want to attend an English speaking university. There’s another option TOEFL the American test version of this. But most colleges around the world accept IELTS and not everybody accepts TOEFL. And I feel like IELTS is easier just because not the language level is easier.
But let’s just say IELTS is more straightforward in the preparation process for sure, and then the general version is for people that want to immigrate abroad. So in fact, a lot of our students are in Brazil right now hoping to immigrate to Canada. That’s like a huge, huge number of people are trying to do that.
